 Seven years ago, on Jan. 22, 2007, residents of El Dorado learned that a unique initiative called the El Dorado Promise would allow graduates of El Dorado Public Schools the opportunity to earn college degrees tuition-free as a result of a $50 million commitment by Murphy Oil Corp. to El Dorado’s greatest resource — its children.

 The Theatre Committee of the South Arkansas Arts Center is now accepting director applications for their 2014 summer production of "9 to 5: The Musical.”  Auditions dates are set for May 5-7, 2014 with performances running July 10-20, 2014. The award winning musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is part of SAAC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.

 The Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources will sparkle once again this year as the Holiday Light Extravaganza encompasses the Oil Field Park beginning Friday and continuing through Dec. 23. The extravaganza will be held from 6:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights through Dec. 21 and also on Dec. 22 and 23.

 This winter the South Arkansas Arts Center invites you to become "part of the show” as they bring the golden age of radio to a modern audience with Walton Jones’ "A 1940’s Radio Christmas Carol” in the Callaway Theatre November 29 through December 8. The Simmons First Bank of El Dorado sponsored production recreates a live radio broadcast on Christmas Eve, 1943, and is wholesome entertainment for the entire family.

11/4/2013 Arkansas Women's Business Center Receives Grant
 Arkansas Women’s Business Center has received a $4,500 grant from the Plum Creek Foundation that will allow the Center to offer Money Smart for Young Adults classes. The courses target high school and young adults in Union and surrounding counties. Money Smart classes are designed to assist individuals in making sound financial decisions. Instruction includes setting realistic financial goals, careful use of credit, saving, and paying for big ticket items like college, autos and a home.

 South Arkansas Community College in El Dorado is scheduled to receive $3,904,256. This funding comes from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant Program, which was authorized by the stimulus bill.

 Main Street El Dorado will present Kenny Rogers live on Saturday, November 9, at the El Dorado Municipal Auditorium. The concert, part of Rogers’ Through the Years World Tour, begins at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

8/13/2013 Vikon Plant Will Benefit El Dorado
  Vikon Farms, a poultry processing company, announced on Monday plans to locate a new processing facility in Arkadelphia which will employ more than 172 people within four years, and Vikon will also contract with a significant number of growers from El Dorado and Union County.

1/20/2013 El Dorado Promise Impacts Test Scores
 Six years after the El Dorado Promise scholarship program was introduced to the students of the El Dorado School District, the program’s impact on student success continues to impress. According the latest El Dorado Promise report released last week, an independent study conducted by the Office of Education Policy at the University of Arkansas (UA-OEP) found that El Dorado junior high students’ test scores were higher than those of similar students in other South Arkansas school districts.

 Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE:MUR) ("Murphy”) announced that its Board of Directors has approved a plan to spin off to its stockholders its U.S. downstream subsidiary, Murphy Oil USA, Inc. ("Murphy USA”), into an independent and separately traded company, and has also authorized a special dividend of $2.50 per share for a total dividend of approximately $500 million and a share buyback program of up to $1 billion of the company’s shares of common stock. Murphy also reaffirmed the plan to divest the U.K. downstream operations and stated that it is continuing to review possible options with respect to selected assets.

  On Wednesday, March 28, 180 students who have met the criteria for the Arkansas Scholars program at the El Dorado High School were honored as Arkansas Scholars at an event sponsored by the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce, El Dorado High School, El Dorado Education Foundation and Union County Community Foundation. The number of students qualified for Arkansas Scholars program has increased from 2011 to 2012.
