Open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., the Barton Library loans books and other materials, provides free public internet access, features a genealogy room, and has five county branches.
The library is also a family-friendly destination. The library has public preschool story time each Wednesday at 11: 00 a.m. The children’s area has puppets, coloring sheets and colors, supplies to make puppets and fans and paper crowns to color and wear. The children's librarian often tells stories.
During the school year, the children's librarian visits most city and county preschools to tell stories offsite. During the summer, the library has their Summer Reading Club activities, which includes plays, prizes, animals, magic shows and more, for the pre-k through grade 4 crowd. Those in grades 5-12 write books and/or movie reviews as well as draw for prizes every two weeks with a grand prize ($100 gift card) at the end.
Teens also sponsor poetry slams at the library and select anime movies to watch throughout the year. The library has a movie series. In the past, they've had showings of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean and other popular movies.
Once a month, Come Together At the Library features a program of general interest to adults. In the past, they've had home decorating programs, history, health, master gardeners with things to give away and local cheese maker Susan Harper. Every spring, they have the Seed Savers, which exchange and trade heirloom seeds to plant for vegetables and fruits. This is done in about eight areas of the state. In January through March, the library has music programs.
