SAAC Holds Oliver” Auditions

Posted on May 6, 2013

The theatre committee of the South Arkansas Arts Center is looking for actors, singers, and dancers for their upcoming summer production of Lionel Bart?s "Oliver!? The Nexus AmerCable sponsored family musical opens in the Callaway Theatre on July 11 and continues through July 21.

"Oliver!?,one of the world?s most loved musicals, is a fun and energetic show that needs all physical and ethnic types. There are starring roles for male and female adults and children and an extra-large ensemble of singers and dancers. Those auditioning should expect a moderate musical theatre style of dancing and singing.

The shows director/choreographer, Monroe Moore, will hold four days of auditions beginning on Friday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. for adults and teens. Saturday, May, at 10:30 a.m., Moore will see children interested in a role and then at 2:30 p.m., he will continue to see adults, teens, and dancers. Auditions continue on Sunday, May 12, at 1:00 p.m. for children, teens and adults. On Saturday, May 18, at 6:00 p.m., Moore will hold call backs, see any new auditionees who could not make the first weekend, and dancers who are interested in dance roles only. Registration begins 30 minutes before auditions on each day. Choose one time to come audition, no need to come twice.

Moore is breaking away from the more traditional staging of the show by casting the orphans and Fagin?s gang with girls and boys. Oliver (looks 9-12 yrs) and Dodger (looks 9-16 yrs) can be male or female. He is looking for 30 plus men and women, 30 plus children and 8 to 12 featured dancers. Anyone 7-107 years old is welcome to audition. Moore is looking for a core group of 8 to 12 dancers who do not have to be singers or actors. Attend May 12 or 18 if auditioning for the specialty dance group.

For auditions, please wear comfortable clothes and appropriate footwear to dance in. Please be prepared to sing 16 bars or one minute of a song of your choice. Select something that is comfortable within your vocal range and bring either an accompaniment CD or sheet music. A musical theatre piece is preferred but if you are auditioning just for the chorus, you may choose to sing something familiar to you, such as "Happy Birthday," or a church song, or a popular song, etc. If you are auditioning for a specific part, please choose a song selection that the character sings from the show. After the singing and dancing portions of the auditions, Moore will hold cold reading from the script.  Chorus Books are available for one day check out. Orchestration/score is available to view in the office. For assistance contact the SAAC office at 862-5474."
