Job Description

The Skilled Tradesman is responsible for the work activities in one or more of the following skilled trades: HVAC mechanical (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting; with emphasis on HVAC. This position reports to the Director of Physical Plant and is governed by state and federal laws and institution policy.

Salary range of $38,000-$42,000 to commensurate with education and experience. Plus, excellent benefit package.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install, maintain, repair and overhaul air conditioning systems, commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and combined heating, ventilation and cooling systems.
  • Assemble, install, repair, and maintain pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing equipment used for water distribution and waste water disposal in residential, commercial and industrial buildings in compliance with code regulations.
  • Assemble install, test, troubleshoot, and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices and related equipment in buildings and other structures.
  • Perform general carpentry using hand and power tools to repair and build structures using necessary materials, such as; wood, sheetrock, roofing, painting, and glass instillation.
  • Assist other skilled tradesman to complete projects that require multiple departments to work together.
  • Maintain inventory on tools and parts specific to assigned trade.
  • Observe safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, and safety precautions in one or more of the skilled trades.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manuals, schematics, building plans, and/or work drawings.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain inventory on needed parts and tools for one or more of the skilled trades.
Required Education and Experience:
  • The formal education equivalent of a high school diploma or GED
  • Must be licensed in HVAC Mechanics in accordance with ACA 17-33-301.
  • Must have at least 1 year HVAC experience.
  • Must have a boiler license or be willing to obtain one.
  • Must have a current valid driver’s license.
  Preferred Education and Experience:
  • The formal education of an associates degree.
  • At least 2 -3 years’ experience in HVAC.

Physical Requirements:

The position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to work during different weather climates; to include hot/cold weather, rain, etc. Must possess mobility to work in and around District buildings and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.
